Filming has begun on the next instalment of The Hunger Games trilogy, Catching Fire.
Lionsgate UK revealed the exciting news on 11 September, giving fans a taste of what they can expect from the highly anticipated sequel.
According to the official press release, the movie will be shot in Atlanta, Georgia, with some parts filmed on location on “the beaches and in the jungles of Hawaii”.
Jennifer Lawrence will reprise her role as heroine, Katniss Everdeen, while Jenna Malone and Sam Claflin will join the cast as Johanna Mason and Finnick Odair respectively.
Lionsgate’s President of Production Eric Feig, said:
“We are so excited to be embarking on this adventure with [director] Francis Lawrence, who has already exhibited immense creative vision and resourcefulness in casting the film and planning its look and feel.
“The stakes are raised in every way in this second story, and we are thrilled to get the production underway in these perfect locations, with our excellent returning cast and some world class actors in new roles.”
Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen returns home after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). However, the pair find out that they now must leave their family and close friends behind again to embarkon a Victor’s Tour of the districts.
Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games – a competition that could change Panem forever.
The first Hunger Games film grossed a massive $700million at the Box Office and catapulted its young stars Lawrence, Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth (Gale) into the limelight globally.
Filming of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is set to wrap at the end of December 2012, with the film expected in cinemas in November 2013.
