Tom Cruise is suing a US magazine for $50million over a cover story which said he abandoned his daughter, Suri.
On 30 July, Life & Style ran a picture of Cruise’s six-year-old daughter on the front page crying, along with the headline:
“Suri in tears, abandoned by her dad”
The film star’s lawyer, Bert Fields, said in a statement that the story was “a vicious lie”:
“Tom is a caring father who dearly loves Suri. She’s a vital part of his life and always will be. To say he has ‘abandoned’ her is a vicious lie. To say it in lurid headlines with a tearful picture of Suri is reprehensible.”
According to the BBC, Cruise’s lawyer denied that Tom was suing the publication to make money, saying:
“Tom doesn’t go round suing people. He’s not a litigious guy.
“But when these sleaze peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he’s going to sue.”
He also added that if the case was successful, 50-year-old Cruise would “undoubtedly give the money to charity”.
Bauer Publishing, which produces Life & Style, is yet to comment.
Tom and ex wife Katie Holmes divorced back in August after five years of marriage. Suri now lives with Holmes in New York, while Cruise has extensive visiting rights.
