DVD review: In Time

In Time is out now

In Time follows Will (Justin Timberlake) as he fights against a corrupt state, where time is the currency. Once you reach 25, you only have a year left on your clock and you have to fight, scrimp, save – get time any way you can to survive.

A young man aged 25 plus three years, Will is from the the Dayton slums – also known as Time Zone 12 – living minute to minute and has to scrape together time just to get him and his mum through the day.

As prices rise and wages fall, he begins to suspect something’s not right, and when he saves a wealthy businessman from being mugged of his ‘century’ in a bar fight, he learns the real truth; for a few to be immortal, many must die.

As the two hide out from the gang, the enigmatic stranger transfers his one hundred year fortune to Will as he sleeps, leaving himself with just five minutes on the clock.

When Will wakes, he realises what’s happened and races to save him, but it’s too late, and the stranger times out, falling to his death.

He might be rich, but now Will is wanted by the government, for both murder and upsetting the balance of time.

Together with beautiful heiress Sylvia (Amanda Seyfried), they race for survival – can they tackle the unfair and corrupt system before their time runs out?

The film itself is a bit of a slow starter and Timberlake, in one of his first major leading roles, struggles at first. However, as the story moves on, you do warm to him and the slightly wooden Seyfried and end up rooting for the characters in their fight against the government.

Sci-fi and action fans will lap this film up; it’s an enjoyable watch overall and does get you thinking, definitely one to try.

In Time is available on Blu-ray Triple Play and DVD from 27 February 2012

Film Friday: In Time

The international trailer for In Time, starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried, has been released and I must say, it looks pretty good.

The film is set in a world where time has become currency. You stop aging at 25, but there’s a catch: your genetically engineered to only live for one more year, unless you can buy your way out.

The rich seem to ‘earn’ decades at a time, giving them a sort of immortality, while the poor have to beg and steal enough hours to make it through the day.

Justin may seem an odd lead choice to some, but it seems to work from what I’ve seen of the trailer – and he was great in The Social Network and Friends with Benefits, so maybe it’s time for him to prove himself in an action role – and no, I’m not counting Alpha Dog.

It’s not a wholly original premise, with strong 1984 links and echoes of recent Bradley Cooper film Limitless, but I think it’s just different and fresh enough to be an enjoyable watch.

The film on the whole looks to have a strong cast too, with Alex Pettyfer, Cillian Murphy and actress-of-the-moment Olivia Wilde also starring.

In  Time comes to cinemas on 1 November 2011.
