Kay, Yates quit Radio One

Reggie and Vernon make way for a new line-up

Vernon Kay and Reggie Yates are to leave Radio One at the end of the year, following a scheduling shake-up.

Kay, who has been working at BBC Radio One for over nine years, is said to want to spend more time with his family, while Yates, who currently presents the Chart Show, will “concentrate on other projects”.

In a statement, Vernon, 38, explained that “it was the right time to leave”:

“I’ve had an incredible nine-and-a-half years at Radio 1 that has exceeded all of my expectations, it has been a fabulous experience and I’ve loved the weekends I have spent with my listeners.

“However, when I was offered a contract extension I thought long and hard, but after 12 years of working weekends with CBBC, T4 and Radio 1, I felt it was the right time to leave as the girls are now both in school so weekends are more precious than ever.”

Both will leave the station at the end of the year, making way for a new schedule in 2013.

Request Show presenter Jameela Jamil will replace Yates and host the Chart Show, with Matt Edmondson fronting a new weekend breakfast show between 10am and 1pm.

Ben Cooper, Controller BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 1Xtra, thanked Reggie and Vernon, before enthusing about the future of the station:

“I’m excited by our brand new shows, which will appeal to the smartphone generation with our audience able to listen, watch and share Radio 1’s great content.”

More Strictly names revealed

Medalist Victoria to appear on Strictly

Two London 2012 medalists and a big name popstar are the latest celebrities to join this year’s Strictly Come Dancing line-up, it has been confirmed.

Olympians Victoria Pendleton and Louis Smith will take to the dance floor for the upcoming tenth series of the BBC reality show, alongside Girls Aloud star, Kimberly Walsh.

British cyclist Victoria won one gold and one silver medal at this year’s Olympic Games in London, while Smith, 23, bagged silver in the pommel horse and picked up bronze for the event in Beijing four years ago.

Tracy Beaker actress Dani Harmer and Westlife’s Nicky Byrne will also appear, however, the remaining eight celebrity contestants are being kept under wraps.

Thirty-one-year-old Victoria’s agent confirmed the news on Twitter, posting:

“@v_pendleton IS doing Strictly – pretty exciting and no doubt she’ll work at it to become a very good dancer. That’s what athletes do.”

Reports emerged last week that Girls Aloud singer Kimberley – who recently showed off her dancing skills as Princess Fiona in the West End adaptation of Shrek – would also be joining Strictly, with the BBC finally confirming the news via Twitter on 8 September:

“Kimberley Walsh joins Strictly Come Dancing! A rumour no longer just the ‘sound of the underground’.”

The new series of Strictly starts on 15 September at 6:30pm on BBC One, with new judge Darcy Bussell replacing Alesha Dixon on the panel.

First star confirmed for Strictly

Dani appeared on Let’s Dance for Sport Relief in March

Tracy Beaker star Dani Harmer is the first celebrity name to be confirmed for the upcoming series of Strictly Come Dancing.

The news broke following reports that touring musical, Disco Inferno, which starred Dani in a main role, had been cancelled due to her alleged participation in Strictly.

According to the BBC, an investor pulled out after learning that the 23-year-old leading lady had quit to take part in the show.

A spokesperson for the BBC has since confirmed that Harmer will be appearing on the dancing reality programme, saying:

“We’re delighted Dani is on board for Strictly and, when booked, was 100% available.”

Dani apologised over Twitter to those who had already bought tickets for the 1970s-based musical, posting:

“I would just like to send a massive apology to everyone that has booked tickets to see Disco Inferno! Unfortunately the tour has been cancelled!

“On behalf of all the cast thank you to all your amazing tweets from you guys who have seen and enjoyed it! We’re all gutted.”

Disco Inferno tells the tale of a wannabe rockstar who sells his soul to the devil to fulfill his dreams.

The production, which also starred Javine Hylton and actor Sam Attwater, ran for just one week before it was cancelled.

The full line-up for this year’s Strictly Come Dancing is expected next week.

‘Downton was f**king atrocious’

Benedict stars in Parade’s End, coming to BBC Two in August

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch has decided to make his opinion on period drama Downton Abbey quite clear, branding it “f**king atrocious”.

The Sherlock star, who is currently promoting BBC period drama Parade’s End, spoke to Reader’s Digest about the new series, before having a pop at Downton’s second season:

“We’re remembering that there was a world before the First World War. We’re living in a culture now that’s revering, or having a nostalgia trip with, the beginning of the 1900s.

“Although Downton traded a lot on the sentiment in the last series… but we won’t talk about that series because it was, in my opinion, f**king atrocious.”

When asked if he worried that Parade’s End would be seen as a similar type of programme to Downton, Cumberbatch, who plays the lead role of Christopher Tietjens in the show, answered:

“There was that fear, yes. I thought, ‘Are we pandering to a taste?’ But this is so much more sophisticated, so much more unusual.

“You rarely see a piece about this class of people that’s this accurate, funny and pointed. We’re not making some clichéd comment, ‘Oh, isn’t it awful the way there’s this upstairs-downstairs divide’.”

September’s issue of Reader’s Digest is out on 21 September. Parade’s End starts on 24 August on BBC Two.

Cheryl walks out of BBC interview

Chezza didn’t see the philosophical side

Popstar Cheryl Cole has allegedly stormed out of an interview with the BBC after being repeatedly asked a “daft” question.

The Call My Name singer was asked on several occasions “why are we here?”, but the star reacted badly to the philosophical question and walked out.

A source told The Mirror:

“Cheryl was happy to chat to the BBC, but it was a bit odd when they started asking her, ‘Why are we here?’

“She took it to mean, ‘Why are we at this event?’ So she said that she was here promoting her new single and performing.

“They repeated, ‘Why are we here?’ At that point, it seemed like a dig at her for not being worthy of being on the same bill as The Wanted and Jessie J.

“They repeated it again, this time saying, ‘Why are we here on Earth?’

“There was a slight pause, and then Cheryl walked off. It was obvious by then they were being daft.”

The 28-year-old had agreed to be interviewed by a team from BBC Three after the Capital FM Summertime Ball, however the ‘interviewers’ were actually filming a prank show called The Revolution Will Be Televised.

Cheryl Cole’s third album, A Million Lights debuted at Number 2 in the charts, behind teen sensation Justin Bieber.

Louis: I hate The Voice

Louis thinks The Voice is “dull and boring”

X Factor judge Louis Walsh has waded into the great talent show debate, declaring that he hates the BBC’s offering, The Voice, calling it “dull and boring”.

Speaking to Heat magazine, the music boss also revealed that he was glad Simon Cowell’s Britain’s Got Talent had beaten the reality programme in the ratings:

“I hate The Voice. I think everyone thought The Voice UK would be like the US version, and it’s not.

“It’s dull and boring. I’m glad BGT is winning the ratings battle – it’s much better.”

When asked by the magazine whether he would ever have considered being a judge on The Voice, he replied:

“No way, it’s not great TV.  The best thing about it are the revolving chairs, and once you’ve seen that, the novelty wears off.”

He also had a pop at The Voice mentor and Black Eyed Peas star will.i.am, saying:

“What’s that man’s real name anyway? It’s not will.i.am, is it?

“He thinks he’s got all the answers, but if he didn’t have Fergie in the band, where would he be? Fergie is the real star. I would love her on the X Factor, and to be a judge on the show.

“The X Factor is the biggest show on TV and the other shows are just copying us with their silly chairs.

“Simon Cowell is the king of TV and if he’s not involved then it’s not good.”

Darcy Bussell joins Strictly

Image: BBC.co.uk

Dancer Darcy Bussell is to join the Strictly Come Dancing judging panel when the show returns this autumn, it has been confirmed.

The former Principal Dancer at the Royal Ballet will replace singer Alesha Dixon, who is now appearing on rival reality show, Britain’s Got Talent.

Bussell, who previously appeared on the programme as a guest judge in 2009, will sit alongside long-standing judges Bruno Tonioli, Len Goodman and Craig Revel Horwood.

Of her new role, Darcy told the BBC:

“I had such a lovely experience in 2009 when I was a guest judge, that coming on board now feels very natural. Strictly combines quality dance and great entertainment, which is such a positive for everybody involved.

“I am very excited and really looking forward to being part of the Strictly team.”

Station controller Danny Cohen described Strictly as the “jewel in BBC One’s crown” and said that there was “no-one better” to join the panel.

Alesha Dixon joined Strictly in 2009, replacing Arlene Phillips; a move that sparked controversy among audiences.

She announced her departure from the show in January 2012, after being offered a judging role on ITV1′s Britain’s Got Talent.

Strictly Come Dancing returns to our screens later this year.

Five’s Sean rejected from The Voice

Image: myspace.com /seanconlonmusic

Former boyband member Sean Conlon has reportedly been rejected from The Voice, after auditioning for the new BBC One reality show.

Sean, who was part of 90s group Five, didn’t make it through to the next stage of the competition, after all four coaches chose not to turn their chairs around.

Mentor Jessie J revealed that she was shocked to see the 30-year-old singer, telling Bang Showbiz:

“I was so excited about Sean from Five auditioning but I couldn’t believe I didn’t turn around for him. He was the first concert I ever went to.

“The way I react when I realise it’s him will be the moment people realise I am still very much in a dream world and pinching myself that I’m here.”

Conlon apparently said he was “gutted” to have failed the audition, admitting that he was looking forward to closing “the door on Sean from Five”.

The Voice format encourages mentors to pick singers from their voice alone through ‘blind’ auditions, with each coach turning their chair around if they like what they hear.

The show will launch on BBC One on 24 March at 7pm, clashing with the first in a new series of Britain’s Got Talent on ITV1.
