‘Downton was f**king atrocious’

Benedict stars in Parade’s End, coming to BBC Two in August

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch has decided to make his opinion on period drama Downton Abbey quite clear, branding it “f**king atrocious”.

The Sherlock star, who is currently promoting BBC period drama Parade’s End, spoke to Reader’s Digest about the new series, before having a pop at Downton’s second season:

“We’re remembering that there was a world before the First World War. We’re living in a culture now that’s revering, or having a nostalgia trip with, the beginning of the 1900s.

“Although Downton traded a lot on the sentiment in the last series… but we won’t talk about that series because it was, in my opinion, f**king atrocious.”

When asked if he worried that Parade’s End would be seen as a similar type of programme to Downton, Cumberbatch, who plays the lead role of Christopher Tietjens in the show, answered:

“There was that fear, yes. I thought, ‘Are we pandering to a taste?’ But this is so much more sophisticated, so much more unusual.

“You rarely see a piece about this class of people that’s this accurate, funny and pointed. We’re not making some clichéd comment, ‘Oh, isn’t it awful the way there’s this upstairs-downstairs divide’.”

September’s issue of Reader’s Digest is out on 21 September. Parade’s End starts on 24 August on BBC Two.

Manchester venue for X Factor final

Final to be held outside London for the first time

This year’s X Factor final will be held in Manchester, show producers have confirmed.

It will be the first time the show’s climax has been staged outside of the Capital.

The first seven X Factor finals were held at Fountain Studios in Wembley, home of the regular live shows, however in 2011, show bosses chose to move the final to the larger Wembley Arena.

This year’s two-night final will now be held at Manchester Central Convention Complex, with around half of tickets set to be distributed to fans via the programme’s sponsor, TalkTalk.

There will be a slight change to the judging panel this season, with Nicole Scherzinger joining Gary Barlow, Tulisa Contostavlos and Louis Walsh in place of departing judge, Kelly Rowland.

Series eight of the X Factor begins on 18 August at 8pm on ITV1, with the final scheduled for December.

X Factor promo upsets Shayne Ward

Shayne won the X Factor in 2005

ITV has launched a new advertising campaign for the X Factor that seems to have hit a nerve with series two winner, Shayne Ward.

The promo looks back at the show’s history and features Leona Lewis, One Direction, Olly Murs, Alexandra Burke, JLS and Little Mix talking about their experiences on the reality show.

However, Shayne, 27, seems a bit rattled that he hasn’t been mentioned, commenting on Twitter:

“Just seen the new X Factor promo video. Yet again it’s like I’m being erased slowly from their history.

“Pathetic really. Would love to know why?”

Ward won the X Factor in 2005 and subsequently scored two platinum albums. His third record, Obsession, reached Number 15 in the charts and his single of the same name debuted at Number 97.

Other series winners Matt Cardle, Joe McElderry, Leon Jackson and Steve Brookstein have also been left out of the promo.

Shayne is currently starring as Stacee Jaxx in 80s-themed musical, Rock of Ages at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London. He is reportedly set to return to the studio when his contract ends this September.

Darcy Bussell joins Strictly

Image: BBC.co.uk

Dancer Darcy Bussell is to join the Strictly Come Dancing judging panel when the show returns this autumn, it has been confirmed.

The former Principal Dancer at the Royal Ballet will replace singer Alesha Dixon, who is now appearing on rival reality show, Britain’s Got Talent.

Bussell, who previously appeared on the programme as a guest judge in 2009, will sit alongside long-standing judges Bruno Tonioli, Len Goodman and Craig Revel Horwood.

Of her new role, Darcy told the BBC:

“I had such a lovely experience in 2009 when I was a guest judge, that coming on board now feels very natural. Strictly combines quality dance and great entertainment, which is such a positive for everybody involved.

“I am very excited and really looking forward to being part of the Strictly team.”

Station controller Danny Cohen described Strictly as the “jewel in BBC One’s crown” and said that there was “no-one better” to join the panel.

Alesha Dixon joined Strictly in 2009, replacing Arlene Phillips; a move that sparked controversy among audiences.

She announced her departure from the show in January 2012, after being offered a judging role on ITV1′s Britain’s Got Talent.

Strictly Come Dancing returns to our screens later this year.
