Spice Girls musical gets opening date

Victoria, Emma, Geri, Mel B and Mel C are all involved

The Spice Girls musical, Viva Forever, is to premiere this December, according to reports.

The long-awaited show, penned by Jennifer Saunders and Mamma Mia writer, Judy Craymer, will take over from Ghost the Musical at the Piccadilly Theatre, reports the Daily Mail.

There were reports back in April that the production had been delayed due to bickering between Mel C and Mel B, with a source telling the New York Post:

“Melanie Brown and Melanie Chisholm just cannot agree. It is driving Jennifer [Saunders] crazy.”

Vivia Forever will apparently tell the story of a mother who takes her daughter to audition for a talent show and will be set against a backdrop of the Spice Girls’ music.

All of the girls are said to be involved with the project, however none of them will star in the production.

Sporty Spice Mel C however, will be appearing as Mary Magdalene in a new production of Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar, alongside Chris Moyles and Tim Minchin, this September.

Auditions for Viva Forever are set to take place in July, with rehearsals to follow in September and previews in November.

Representatives for both musicals are yet to comment or confirm any dates.

Gavin & Stacey the musical?

No film, but maybe a musical

Gavin & Stacey star Joanna Page has disappointed fans, by revealing that a film version of the BBC comedy is unlikely.

However, she has let slip that she would love to take part in a musical version.

The 33-year-old, who plays the title role of Stacey in the award-winning sitcom, admitted to PA that she is intrigued by the possibility of a movie, but says it is unlikely:

“I’d like to make a film if we could be filming in Hawaii or Spain or somewhere, that would be nice, but I don’t think we’ll ever do a film because everything was all done in the telly series.

“I’d quite like to do a musical – that would be quite fun if we could do it all with rock songs; although my singing is not that wonderful, so I’d probably have to speak-sing my bit.”

The actress also spoke highly of her co-star James Corden, who played Smithy in the show, who became a father back in March:

“I’ve seen photos [of Corden's son] but I haven’t seen him in real life. He just looks adorable and James is going to be an absolutely perfect father.

“When we were doing the third series he was just amazing with the little baby we had and he just looked like he was made to do it.

“I’m the sort of person who can never think of anything to say to a baby, but he just looks like a natural.”

Joanna is set to star alongside Sue Johnston in new Sky One comedy, Gates, this autumn.
