Kay, Yates quit Radio One

Reggie and Vernon make way for a new line-up

Vernon Kay and Reggie Yates are to leave Radio One at the end of the year, following a scheduling shake-up.

Kay, who has been working at BBC Radio One for over nine years, is said to want to spend more time with his family, while Yates, who currently presents the Chart Show, will “concentrate on other projects”.

In a statement, Vernon, 38, explained that “it was the right time to leave”:

“I’ve had an incredible nine-and-a-half years at Radio 1 that has exceeded all of my expectations, it has been a fabulous experience and I’ve loved the weekends I have spent with my listeners.

“However, when I was offered a contract extension I thought long and hard, but after 12 years of working weekends with CBBC, T4 and Radio 1, I felt it was the right time to leave as the girls are now both in school so weekends are more precious than ever.”

Both will leave the station at the end of the year, making way for a new schedule in 2013.

Request Show presenter Jameela Jamil will replace Yates and host the Chart Show, with Matt Edmondson fronting a new weekend breakfast show between 10am and 1pm.

Ben Cooper, Controller BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 1Xtra, thanked Reggie and Vernon, before enthusing about the future of the station:

“I’m excited by our brand new shows, which will appeal to the smartphone generation with our audience able to listen, watch and share Radio 1’s great content.”

T4 axed by Channel 4

T4 to end after 14 years

Channel 4 has announced that its T4 strand of programming will end this December, after 14 years on air.

The show, which launched the careers of Alexa Chung, Vernon Kay, Dermot O’Leary and new Radio One breakfast host, Nick Grimshaw, will reportedly make way for a number of new music shows when the final edition airs.

Jameela Jamil, one of the current T4 presenters, backed up the news on Twitter, posting:

“Yes. It is true and it is very sad… T4 will be closing its doors this is year… This is probably what ol’ nostradamus was ravin on about.” [sic]

Known as ‘hangover TV’ and featuring programmes such as Hollyoaks, Friends and Scrubs, T4 was launched in 1998, however its audience had declined in recent years.

The series had recently been moved over to E4 on a Sunday morning to make way for new show, Sunday Brunch.

Dominic Bird, Channel 4′s Head of Formats, said:

“Whilst T4 has historically been a much loved destination for our young audiences, its popularity has been incrementally diminished over time by the digital revolution. In a landscape where Channel 4 now provides E4, the nation’s most popular channel for 16 -34 year olds.

“T4 has been fighting incredibly hard maintain the cut through it once enjoyed and now is the right time to look at more appropriate ways to serve our younger viewers.”

Radio One shake-up hits DJs

Scott hosted drive time for eight years

Scott Mills has been axed from his Radio One drive time show after eight years and is to be replaced by afternoon DJ, Greg James.

In a huge shake-up at the station, Radio One and Radio 1 Xtra controller, Ben Cooper, confirmed that Mills will take over Greg’s previous 1pm to 4pm slot, while James will be on air from 4pm.

Of the move, 26-year-old Greg said:

“My dream job just keeps getting better and better. I can’t wait to get going with the new show!”

Edith Bowman, who has been at Radio One since 2003, has not escaped the effects of the re-shuffle, and will be replaced on the weekend breakfast show by Radio 1Xtra’s Gemma Cairney.

Cairney, who has presented the afternoon show on Radio One’s sister station for three years, said:

“I arrived at 1Xtra just over three years ago a wide eyed puppy & soon became obsessed with all things radio.

“It will be really emotional, but I’m only moving downstairs to Radio One and I can’t wait for all the new fun it’ll bring.”

Bowman will now be moved to a mid-week slot, hosting the Radio One review show on Tuesday nights between 9pm and 10pm.

T4 presenter Jameela Jamil has also joined the station to host the new Radio One request show, which will be broadcast every Sunday between 7pm and 9pm.

On the changes to the schedule Cooper said:

“These are exciting times at Radio 1 & 1Xtra. The latest changes are about attracting even more young listeners by bringing in new and fresh talent to the stations.

“At the end of last year we announced changes to the specialist music line-up, so I’m really looking forward to hearing the new line up in full when we launch in April.”

The new changes will come into force on 2 April.

Greg James, Ellie Goulding split

Pair said to still be friends

Singer Ellie Goulding and Radio One DJ Greg James have gone their separate ways, according to reports.

A split is said to have been on the cards for the couple since Ellie moved out of the flat they shared last year.

A source close to the Starry Eyed singer told The Sun:

“Things had not been right for a while but they only called it a day a month ago.

“It was just a real struggle for them to be in the same place at the same time. The split is amicable and they are still friends.”

The split doesn’t seem to have got Ellie down though, as she Tweeted recently about her hopes for 2012:

“Next year is mostly about my new record, being a good person and my first marathon. Really grateful for my life.”

Moyles confirmed for new Sky show

Chris' new Sky venture

Radio One DJ Chris Moyles has been confirmed as one of the hosts of new Sky dating show, The Love Machine.

Moyles will front the show alongside former X Factor star and current face of Iceland supermarkets, Stacey Solomon.

Chris said of his new venture:

“I’m really excited about hosting the show. It’s all the awkwardness of a giant speed dating event but in front of a live studio audience and on the TV!”

It is not known if this move will affect the morning DJ’s current contract with the BBC.

Featuring a huge set filmed in front of a big studio audience, The Love Machine will focus on a giant dating machine filled with single guys and girls hoping to be selected by the night’s contestants.

Two couples created by The Love Machine will then go head to head and tackle the issues men and women confront on a first date but never normally dare to discuss – sex, money and fanciability.

The winning couple will go on an incredible holiday for two – but not before one dastardly final twist that gives them the chance to ditch their date for a last minute upgrade.

Duncan Gray, Sky’s Head of Entertainment, commented:

“The Love Machine is a funny, entertaining and at times painfully honest game show based on the oldest dating principle around – looks and first impressions count!”

The Love Machine is set to air on Sky Living HD in spring of 2012.

Gaga confirmed for charity concert

More acts still to be announced

Lady Gaga and Coldplay are among the first artists confirmed for a special Children in Need concert to take place this November.

The event, organised by X Factor judge and Take That star Gary Barlow, was announced on this morning’s Chris Moyles Show on Radio One.

Gary told the team that he “can’t wait” to see it all come together on 17 November:

“I’m so thrilled that these incredible artists are giving their time for such a special charity that is very close to my heart.

“There are still some great acts we’re keeping up our sleeve to announce in the coming weeks and who knows, I might even sing a little something on the night too.”

JLS, N-Dubz and Ed Sheeran were also named as performers alongside Coldplay and Gaga, with further artists to be announced in the coming weeks.

David Ramsden, BBC Children in Need CEO, said of the concert:

“With Gary’s incredible support we are going to be able to change thousands of young lives right here in the UK.

“He has put together an amazing line-up for an unforgettable evening which will raise lots of money for disadvantaged children who desperately need our help.”

The show, hosted by Moyles, Fearne Cotton and former Doctor Who David Tennant, will take place at the MEN Arena in Manchester on 17 November.

Tickets are priced between £55 and £95 and will go on sale at 9am on 16 September from the BBC Children in Need website.

Vernon Kay, Sara Cox ‘facing axe’

DJs to be replaced?

BBC Radio One DJs Vernon Kay and Sara Cox are among the stars to be axed from the station, according to reports.

According to The Sunday Mirror, the pair have been warned by acting controller Ben Cooper that they could be replaced by fresher talent.

Edith Bowman and Trevor Nelson are also said to be up for the chop.

A source told the newspaper:

“A few of the DJs have grown up at Radio One and in some cases have settled down and have families.

“But that means they’re not as in tune with the younger generation as they used to be.”

A spokesperson for the station refused to confirm or deny the reports, instead saying:

“Any story about schedule changes would be pure speculation.”

Cox joined Radio One back in 1999, while Kay made his debut in 2004.

Recent reports have suggested that T4′s Jameela Jamil was in talks to join the station, after impressing bosses with a series of pilots.

Radio One boss steps down

'New career opportunities'

The controller of Radio One and Radio 1Xtra, Andy Parfitt, is to leave the BBC after 13 years.

Parfitt, whose current role also incorporates the Asian Network and popular music, will leave at the end of July to pursue new career opportunities.

He led Radio One and its sister station 1Xtra to record audience figures during his stay at the network.

Parfitt told Newsbeat:

“It’s a big deal for me and I feel it’s the right thing for me to do”.

He also spoke highly of Radio One, saying the station is currently at the top of its game:

“It’s in great shape, prepared now for the world of the web and visual content.

“It’s a remarkable achievement for the BBC to have a youth service that is as important and relevant now as it was back in the late 60s.”

Director of Audio and Music, Tim Davie, said:

“Andy has been a fantastic controller and leaves Radio 1 in rude health – with distinctive, high quality programmes and record listening figures – having transformed the station into a fully interactive digital proposition.

“He has been an inspirational leader within the BBC and highly respected across the whole of the radio industry.”

Andy’s 13 years at the head of Radio One make him the station’s longest service controller since its launch in 1967.
